Presentation by Senior Trade Commissioner, A.K Tareen

added:23/02/10

AIBC SA’s recent networking event featured a presentation by Senior Trade Commissioner, A.K Tareen aptly titled “Opportunities amongst the challenges.” Tareen opened by saying “India is complex and lucrative market to do business, if it wasn’t either of these things we wouldn’t be here tonight”. Indian is a trillion-dollar economy changing every day. Tareen said “if you haven’t been to India in the last 12 months – you don’t know the market” thus is the rapidly changing landscape. The buzz word ‘GFC’ used daily in the West, didn’t infiltrate the Indian business psyche, “what GFC?” is the standard response.

Despite the tremendous opportunities the challenges are plentiful; no free trade agreements exist between Indian States, turn-around times are slow and the sentiment towards Australia due to attacks on students is at an all time low. Indeed, India ranks 133 in the ‘Ease of doing business’ ranking. Ultimately, when doing business with India, Tareen says follow the ‘Three P’s’ – patience, perseverance and persuasion.

The SA Chapter has recently had a successful Trade Mission to India and are here to assist with enquiries.
